Dublin Zoo faces €486k operating loss due to EEHV outbreak, dropping visitor numbers by 9%.

Dublin Zoo projects managing the Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) outbreak, which resulted in the deaths of two young Asian elephants, will cost between €100,000 and €150,000. The outbreak caused a 9% drop in visitor numbers in 2022, leading to an operating loss of €486,000. Despite these challenges, the zoo anticipates improved attendance in 2024 and maintains an operating surplus that supports conservation efforts and capital projects.
