On October 4, 2024, a task force in Ghana's Atewa Forest attempted to arrest over 40 illegal miners, known as galamsey operators, but they escaped by swimming across the Birim River. The task force arrested one Togolese national and destroyed 20 changfans, which pollute the river. The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners is calling for public assistance in locating the miners, amid rising pressure on the government to combat illegal mining activities.
