In 2023, cancer, heart disease, and pneumonia were the leading causes of death in South Korea, with a total of 352,511 deaths reported—a 5.5% decrease from 2022. Cancer accounted for 24.2% of deaths, heart disease for 9.4%, and pneumonia for 8.3%. Suicide remained a significant concern, particularly among those aged 39 and younger, with an 8.3% increase in cases, marking South Korea's highest suicide rate among OECD countries.
