Canadian government develops Red Dress Alert pilot program for missing Indigenous women with a $1.3M budget.

The Canadian federal government is developing a pilot program for the Red Dress Alert system, intended to notify the public when Indigenous women or girls are reported missing, similar to Amber Alerts. Led by a Manitoba Indigenous group, the pilot was announced in May and has a budget of $1.3 million. This initiative seeks to address the alarming homicide rate of Indigenous women and girls, which is six times higher than that of non-Indigenous women, according to Statistics Canada.
