ETH Zurich researchers discovered vertical transmission of endosymbiont bacteria in fungi, benefitting both generations.

Researchers at ETH Zurich have uncovered a process of vertical transmission of endosymbionts—bacteria living inside fungi—that benefits both generations. By injecting Mycetohabitans bacteria into the fungus Rhizopus microsporus, they found these bacteria were passed to offspring via spores. Initially, this reduced the fungi's fitness, but over time, the relationship evolved into a mutually beneficial one, highlighting the potential for successful endosymbiotic evolution.
