Michigan's lifetime sex offender registry law ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge.

A federal judge in Michigan, Mark Goldsmith, has ruled that the state's sex offender registry law, mandating lifetime registration for about 17,000 individuals, is unconstitutional. This decision reinstates a previous 25-year registration requirement and also eliminates the obligation for registrants added since 2011 to report online profiles. The judge cited violations of the Eighth Amendment and questioned the law's effectiveness in reducing recidivism.
