2022 study identifies recessive haplotype causing Holstein calf muscle weakness, leading to increased calf mortality.

A newly identified genetic disorder in Holstein cattle, called Holstein calf muscle weakness or calf recumbency, leads to calf mortality due to an inability to stand. This condition, linked to a recessive haplotype, was first reported in 2022. It affects calves primarily in their first two months of life. To mitigate the disorder, farmers should use inbreeding reports and genetic tests to avoid mating related animals. Approximately 10% of Holsteins in the U.S. are carriers.
