2021's Great Scottish Squirrel Survey aims to assess declining red squirrel population through public sightings reporting.
A new survey in Scotland aims to assess the declining red squirrel population, primarily threatened by competition from grey squirrels and the squirrelpox virus. Organized by Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels (SSRS), the "Great Scottish Squirrel Survey" encourages public participation from September 30 to October 6. Residents can report squirrel sightings online to aid conservation efforts and help track species distribution. Last year, nearly 2,000 sightings were reported.
