2023 New Zealand recorded 226,600 work-related injury claims, a 0.5% increase, with a 2.6% decrease in incidence rate (86/1000)

In 2023, New Zealand recorded 226,600 work-related injury claims, up by 1,200 from 2022, but the incidence rate fell to 86 claims per 1,000 full-time equivalent employees, the lowest since 2002. Fatal claims decreased to 54, also a record low. The manufacturing, agriculture, and construction sectors had the highest injury rates, with trade workers accounting for the most claims. Soft-tissue injuries constituted 65% of all claims.
