1st documented rabies outbreak in Cape fur seals; 24 seals test positive, origin unclear, no human cases.

Scientists in South Africa have reported the first known outbreak of rabies in Cape fur seals, with at least 24 seals testing positive for the virus along the west and south coasts. This marks the first documented case of rabies transmission among marine mammals. The outbreak was initially detected after a seal bit a dog in June. Authorities are investigating the virus's transmission, possibly from jackals in Namibia, and have begun vaccinating some seals. No human cases have been reported.
