11 mpox cases linked to Queenstown's Winter Pride Festival; WHO declares global public health emergency.

Health NZ has reported 11 mpox cases linked to the Winter Pride Festival in Queenstown, up from six earlier this month. One additional case was contracted overseas. The virus in this cluster is clade II, distinct from recent clade I outbreaks in Africa, prompting the WHO to declare a global public health emergency. Mpox primarily affects gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, with symptoms typically appearing 1 to 3 weeks post-exposure.
