The U.S. Board on Geographic Names has officially renamed Clingmans Dome, the highest peak in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, to its original Cherokee name, Kuwohi, meaning "mulberry place." This change, requested by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, acknowledges the mountain's significance to the Cherokee people. The renaming process began in 2022 and highlights the importance of preserving indigenous heritage in the park, which attracts over 650,000 visitors annually.
