Former Gabon President Ali Bongo Ondimba withdraws from politics after coup, calls for clemency for imprisoned wife and son.
Ali Bongo Ondimba, the former president of Gabon, has announced his withdrawal from politics following his ousting in a military coup last year. He called for clemency for his wife and son, who are imprisoned on corruption charges. Bongo, who ruled for 14 years, admitted to leadership failings and resides in Libreville, free to leave. The new government, led by General Brice Oligui Nguema, is establishing a civilian government and denies claims of family torture.
