George Speight, former coup leader in Fiji, was pardoned and released from prison after 24 years for treason. He led a 2000 coup, taking then-Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and other MPs hostage. The pardon, granted by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere on September 18, 2024, followed recommendations from Fiji's Mercy Commission, which cited Speight's rehabilitation and lengthy imprisonment. He was one of seven individuals pardoned.
