Asif Raza Merchant, a Pakistani man with ties to Iran, has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempting to commit terrorism and murder-for-hire. He is accused of plotting to assassinate a U.S. politician in retaliation for the killing of Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani. Prosecutors claim Merchant sought to hire hitmen and spent time in Iran before traveling to the U.S. He was arrested in July and is currently detained pending trial.
