He served as bishop from 1994 to 2016 and was known for his role in expanding Catholic Charities in the region. In 2002, he apologized for reinstating a priest who later admitted to sexual abuse. Slattery was also a vocal critic of Notre Dame’s invitation to Barack Obama for a graduation speech in 2009. Funeral arrangements are underway.
