University of Limerick graduate Olivia Humphreys wins James Dyson Award for portable scalp-cooling device Athena for cancer patients.

Olivia Humphreys, a University of Limerick graduate, has won the James Dyson Award for her invention, Athena, a portable scalp-cooling device for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Inspired by her mother’s experience, Athena reduces hair loss by cooling the scalp and limiting blood flow, making treatment more accessible and affordable at around €1,000, compared to traditional machines costing €40,000. Humphreys will continue developing the device through an internship at Luminate Medical.
