South Korea's greenhouse gas emissions fell for the second straight year, decreasing 4.4% in 2023 to 624.2 million tons. This decline is largely attributed to an economic slowdown, with industrial emissions down 3.0% and energy generation emissions down 7.6%, thanks to increased use of nuclear and renewable energy. Building emissions also dropped 7.0% due to milder winter temperatures. Overall, the country recorded its lowest emissions per GDP since 1990.
