Australia to establish independent National Student Ombudsman addressing sexual assault, harassment in universities.
The Australian government is set to create an independent National Student Ombudsman to enhance safety for university students, particularly regarding sexual assault and harassment. This initiative, led by Education Minister Jason Clare, responds to alarming survey results indicating that one in 20 students face sexual assault and one in six experience harassment. The ombudsman will investigate complaints, make recommendations, and monitor university compliance, starting February 2025 pending legislation approval.
