Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) implements "tap-only" gates on Sheppard Line to combat $20M annual fare evasion.
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is eliminating "no tap" gates to combat fare evasion, which costs the agency over $20 million annually. Starting September 9, the Sheppard Line will transition to "tap-only" mode, requiring PRESTO cards for entry. Commuters using cash or non-PRESTO methods must validate their fare with staff. Fines for evasion can reach $425. This initiative aims to address a projected $124 million loss from fare evasion in 2023.
