NHTSA proposes new safety regulations for large SUVs/pickup trucks to reduce pedestrian fatalities.

The NHTSA has proposed new safety regulations aimed at reducing pedestrian fatalities caused by large SUVs and pickup trucks. The rule, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, targets passenger vehicles under 10,000 pounds and includes testing to minimize head injuries in collisions. Pedestrian deaths in the U.S. rose 57% from 2013 to 2022, and the NHTSA estimates the new standards could save 67 lives annually. Public comments will be accepted for 60 days.
