On September 4, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria, a 65-year-old visually impaired man, Ewenla Adetomiwa, attempted suicide at the Third Mainland Bridge while with his two children, believing the government would care for them after his death. Onlookers alerted the police, who intervened. In a separate incident on August 30, 2024, an 18-year-old named Elijah, thought to be mentally disturbed, also attempted suicide but was rescued and returned to his family.
