On September 7, 2024, a Colorado State Patrol trooper was shot while parked on U.S. 36 in Westminster. A passing driver fired multiple rounds, hitting the trooper once. After the shooter stopped and continued firing, the trooper returned fire, killing the assailant. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized.
