In 2023, a record 86 Vancouver Island marmot pups were born, the highest since 2011. This critically endangered species has benefitted from good weather, abundant food, and successful hibernation. The pups came from 32 litters across 17 colonies. Conservation efforts, initiated in 1997, involve multiple organizations and have seen nearly 700 captive-bred marmots released since 2003, despite ongoing challenges from predators and harsh weather.
