Haiti declares nationwide state of emergency due to escalating gang violence.

Haiti has declared a nationwide state of emergency in response to escalating gang violence that has overtaken much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and spread to neighboring regions. Initially declared for the Ouest department on March 3, the emergency status now includes other areas. The U.S. plans to bolster a UN-backed security mission, with 400 Kenyan police already deployed and more troops expected. The conflict has displaced nearly 580,000 people and left about five million facing severe hunger.
