France's Flamanville EPR reactor automatically shut down after initial startup, confirming safety system functionality.

France's European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) in Flamanville automatically shut down one day after its initial startup due to a complex startup process. EDF, the state-owned energy company, stated this shutdown confirms the safety system's functionality. The reactor, plagued by significant delays and cost overruns, is expected to connect to the grid by autumn and eventually power about three million homes at full capacity of 1,600 megawatts.
