3 Canadian researchers found signs of awareness in comatose patients using fNIRS technology.

Researchers from Canada's Lawson Health Research Institute and London Health Sciences Centre have found signs of awareness in three comatose patients using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). One patient displayed significant brain activity when asked to imagine playing tennis, suggesting cognitive awareness despite appearing unresponsive. This study, published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could influence decisions on aggressive care for such patients. Further research is underway.
