Michael Smith, a 51-year-old inmate, was found unresponsive at the Riley County Jail on Monday afternoon and later pronounced dead. Despite CPR efforts, emergency services were unable to revive him. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will investigate the incident, as mandated by state law for inmate deaths, unless ruled otherwise by a physician. Smith's next-of-kin have been notified of his passing.
