The Gauteng Department of Health in South Africa is alarmed by a rise in food poisoning cases among children, particularly in townships and informal settlements. Since February 2024, there have been 207 cases and 10 deaths, with the Ekurhuleni district most affected. The department is collaborating with educational institutions to promote health awareness and hygiene practices. They also urge municipalities to enforce hygiene standards in local shops to prevent contamination.
