Brazil's Aneel activates "Red Level 2" charge on electricity bills due to low hydroelectric reservoir levels, adding 7.88 reais per 100 kWh.

Brazil's power regulator, Aneel, has activated a "Red Level 2" charge on electricity bills due to low water levels in hydroelectric reservoirs during the dry season, leading to an extra cost of 7.88 reais ($1.40) per 100 kilowatt-hours. This is the first implementation of "Red Level 2" since August 2021, prompted by forecasts of 50% below-average rainfall, necessitating reliance on pricier thermoelectric plants. Hydroelectricity remains over half of Brazil's energy supply.
