Banff National Park reintroduces Westslope cutthroat trout to Cascade Creek, aiming for a self-sustaining population after their 80-year absence.
Banff National Park has reintroduced Westslope cutthroat trout to Cascade Creek, marking a significant conservation achievement after their absence for nearly 80 years. The three-year plan, involving the transfer of 18,000 trout eggs, aims to create a self-sustaining population. Enhanced water flows and habitat improvements following the 2013 floods facilitated this effort. The project is a collaboration among Parks Canada, TransAlta, and GeoProcess Research Associates, set for completion by August 2026.
