California health insurers Blue Cross of California Partnership Plan and Anthem Blue Cross fined $850,000 for denying gender-affirming care coverage.

California's largest health insurers, Blue Cross of California Partnership Plan and Anthem Blue Cross, were fined $850,000 for denying coverage for gender-affirming care. The insurers must now review 150 denied cases, implement changes for treating patients with gender dysphoria, and hire a dedicated case manager. This decision comes after the companies categorized some surgeries as "not medically necessary" despite the state's Insurance Gender Nondiscrimination Act of 2013 protecting the LGBTQ+ community from health coverage discrimination.
