12.7% of marine teleost fish species may face extinction, five times higher than previous estimates, according to a new study by Montpellier's MARBEC Unit.

A new study by Montpellier's MARBEC Unit reveals that 12.7% of marine teleost fish species may face extinction, five times higher than previous IUCN estimates at 2.5%. Researchers used AI and machine learning to predict extinction risks for 4,992 data-deficient species, categorizing 78.5% as non-threatened or threatened. Hotspots include the South China Sea, Philippine and Celebes Seas, and west coasts of Australia and North America. The study suggests increased research and conservation efforts in these regions.
