Manitoba's government has extended its temporary program to combat retail theft and violent crime in some Winnipeg areas, allocating an additional $774,000 for overtime costs at the Winnipeg Police Service through September and October. The program, initially announced in May, seeks to improve safety in hot spot areas by combining arrests with proactive community engagement. Premier Wab Kinew indicated more permanent police funding is being considered as the government evaluates long-term options to reduce retail crime.
