B.C. salmon task force plans "emergency enhancement" of Chilcotin River fish stocks after landslide, with hatchery releases and temporary fishing ban.

The B.C. salmon task force, comprising the Fisheries Department, First Nations, and the B.C. government, prepares for "emergency enhancement" of fish stocks following the Chilcotin River landslide. Sockeye salmon are entering the river, but further assessment is needed to verify upstream migration restoration. Chinook and sockeye salmon will be released from hatcheries as needed. Chief Joe Alphonse of the Tsilhqot'in National Government urges downstream First Nations not to harvest salmon this year to reduce stress on the current run.
