The US Labor Department awarded $6 million to the Hampton Roads Workforce Council to expand registered apprenticeship programs in shipbuilding, attracting workers for the inherently dangerous industry. The Biden administration's initiative supports Newport News Shipbuilding's goal of recruiting 20,000 new hires in the next decade, as the US Navy anticipates a need for tens of thousands of new workers. Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su and Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro visited the Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding to recognize the efforts of the HRWC in improving employment pathways and enhancing the region's workforce.
