Study led by Kate Dun-Campbell links unhealthy commodities to mental health issues, including depression, suicide, and self-harm.

A study led by Kate Dun-Campbell from LSHTM links unhealthy commodities like tobacco, alcohol, ultra-processed foods, social media, and fossil fuels to mental health issues including depression, suicide, and self-harm. Unhealthy commodities may contribute to mental health disorders, but research is needed to establish underlying causes. The study analyzed 65 review studies and found evidence of links between depression and alcohol, tobacco, gambling, social media, ultra-processed foods, and air pollution; suicide and alcohol, tobacco, gambling, social media, climate change, and air pollution; and self-harm and social media. Anxiety was also linked to climate change and air pollution.
