New York City Mayor Eric Adams oversaw the burning of 8,000 pounds of seized cannabis products from unlicensed shops as part of "Operation Padlock to Protect." The operation shut down over 1,000 illicit cannabis businesses. The confiscated cannabis was incinerated in an effort to deter people from salvaging them from landfills. The waste company Reworld, assisting with the destruction, said that a filtration system would "scrub all those fumes," leaving "about 99.9 percent water vapor." Critics argue that the city could invest in education, public parks, libraries, housing, and other resources rather than spending resources on police actions aimed at burning weed.
