Brisbane's $3.6bn riverfront casino precinct, Queens Wharf, has opened after eight years of construction. The staged opening features the Star Grand Hotel and casino, Sky Deck public viewing platform, event centre, and bikeway, but questions remain over its viability and the precinct's future is uncertain. The Queensland government fined the Star in Brisbane and the Gold Coast $100m for anti-money laundering and responsible gaming failings in 2022, and a 90-day casino suspension has been delayed until the end of 2024, pending the outcome of a NSW inquiry. Star Brisbane CEO Daniel Finch emphasized the precinct is about entertainment, not gambling, with the casino representing only 5% of the precinct's revenue.
