2021-present container ship contracting surpasses 2004-2007 record with a 44% capacity increase, forecasted to grow 12% by 2030.

Container ship contracting has reached 10.47 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) since 2021, surpassing the previous four-year record from 2004-2007. This represents a 44% increase in capacity compared to the beginning of 2021. BIMCO forecasts the fleet to grow at least 12% by the end of the decade, with an average annual growth rate of 2.4%. However, an oversupply could occur if fleet growth outpaces cargo volume growth following the Red Sea crisis.
