Indian government approves Rs 4,136 cr for 15,000 MW hydropower projects in northeast India over 8 years.

The Indian government has approved Rs 4,136 crore to support the development of 15,000 MW hydropower projects in northeast India over eight years. The financial aid will be provided through joint ventures between state entities and Central public sector developers of hydroelectric projects. The support is expected to be spent by April 2032, with 10% of the Power Ministry's total outlay allocated for the Northeastern region. The grant for state governments' equity portion is capped at 24% of the total project equity, up to a maximum of Rs 750 crore per project. The initiative aims to develop projects with a total capacity of 15,000 MW and align with India's commitment to address climate change.
