Taoiseach Simon Harris and Minister for State for Equality Roderic O'Gorman have announced their intention to pass hate crime legislation before the current Irish government's term ends. The legislation will focus on ensuring the hate speech section does not interfere with or override freedom of speech, and follows a surge in attacks on asylum seekers in Dublin. Ireland is one of the few countries in Europe without hate crime legislation.
