34 out of 257 South African municipalities achieved clean audits for the 2022-23 financial year.
South Africa's Auditor-General, Tsakani Maluleke, has revealed that only 34 out of 257 municipalities achieved clean audits for the 2022-23 financial year, indicating no meaningful improvement in the financial management of local government. The City of Cape Town was the only metropolitan municipality to receive a clean audit. Maluleke called for a culture of performance, accountability, transparency, and institutional integrity to improve municipalities' financial health and service delivery.
