Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek issues an Indigenous heritage protection order for part of the McPhillamys Gold Project, rendering it unviable.

Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has issued an Indigenous heritage protection order for part of the $1bn McPhillamys Gold Project in central-west New South Wales, in response to concerns from Wiradjuri traditional owners about the headwaters and springs of the Belubula River. The decision has made the project unviable due to the time required to find an alternative location for the tailings dam, a key waste site. NSW Premier Chris Minns and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have expressed support for the project, discussing the possibility of an "expedited" approval for any changes to existing plans.
