Canadian government pauses reinstated northern cod fishery off Newfoundland's east coast due to seasonal fish limits.

The Canadian federal government has paused the reinstated commercial northern cod fishery off Newfoundland's east coast due to approaching seasonal fish landing limits, effective until Sept 15. The fishery, closed for 32 years before its reopening in June, had led to thousands of job losses. The temporary halt affects east coast fishers, while Labrador fishers are restricted to the southeast coast until Sept 15. The Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union expects some fishers to be put out of work due to the suspension.
