Finland's Stora Enso suspends logging, faces costs for damaging endangered mussels, and undergoes internal investigation.

Finland's Stora Enso halted logging operations in areas where there are restrictions under the Water Act, Forest Act, or Nature Conservation Act after killing thousands of endangered freshwater pearl mussels. The company faces costs for cleaning up and rehabilitating the Hukkajoki River, with each protected mussel valued at €589 ($659) in damages. Stora Enso has launched an internal investigation and will reassess their operations. Finland's Environment Minister, Kai Mykkänen, suggests compensation through investment in protecting the species in other areas of the country.
