Woodside Petroleum's $30bn Browse gas project in Australia faces a regulatory setback as its environmental approval request is denied.

Woodside Petroleum's $30bn Browse gas project in Australia faces a setback as its request for a regulatory shortcut is denied. The project, involving gas fields discovered 51 years ago, faces potential environmental rejection over impacts on blue whales, turtles, and Scott Reef. Woodside's 2019 proposal to release 107 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere is being reconsidered, with a high-risk, high-cost plan to capture and store CO2 under the seabed. Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek will decide the environmental viability of this plan.
