Stewart was killed in a fiery crash involving a construction vehicle on Interstate 66 in Fairfax County, Virginia on August 23, 2024 at 7:51 a.m. The vehicle crossed traffic bollards, entered the Express Lanes, struck a guardrail, a jersey wall, flipped on its side and caught fire, damaging the nearby E-ZPass system equipment. The Express Lanes were closed for several hours while crews inspected the damage.
