Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers orders flags at half-staff on August 26, 2024, to honor U.S. Army Air Forces Sergeant Jack Hohlfeld, who died in World War II. Hohlfeld's remains were recently identified and returned to Wisconsin for burial. Born in Vernon County and raised in La Crosse and Trempealeau Counties, Hohlfeld was captured by Japanese forces, held captive in a POW camp, and died on December 26, 1942. His family advocated for his identification, and his remains were positively identified in May 2024. He will be buried in La Crosse on August 26, 2024.
