The US military confirmed it carried out an airstrike in Syria on August 23, killing a senior leader of Al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group Hurras al-Din. Abu Abdul Rahman al-Makki was a member of the Shura Council and oversaw terrorist operations from Syria. Hurras al-Din shares Al-Qaeda's global aspirations to conduct attacks against US and Western interests. The US military currently has around 900 troops in Syria, as part of the international coalition against the Islamic State group.
